Myrna Calampiano Lunasin, 80
, departed this life to be with our Lord on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, in Norfolk, Virginia. She was born on September 29, 1942, to Norberto and Marcelina Calampiano in Barangay San Ignacio, San Pablo City, Laguna, Philippines.

Myrna graduated from Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines, and immigrated to the United States in 1965. In 1967, she married her husband, Nestor Agahan Lunasin. A devoted military spouse and mother, Myrna lived in New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, and Ohio, in addition to Virginia.

She had a long career as a registered nurse, caring for a multitude of patients in various hospitals and nursing homes. Myrna found great joy in doting on her three grandchildren, creating delicious dishes for her family, and tending to her collection of plants.

She will be remembered as a loving and caring person, with a generous spirit, and a woman of genuine faith.

In addition to being predeceased by her parents, Myrna was predeceased by her brother, Noli Calampiano; her sister, Adora Castillo; her daughter, Michelle Lunasin; and her loving husband of 54 years, Nestor.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Nestor Lunasin, Jr. and Michael Lunasin (and his wife, Elann); her granddaughter, Mikaella Lunasin; her grandsons, Maeson Lunasin and Elijah Lunasin; and her brothers, Enrico Calampiano (and his wife, Emma), Norberto Calampiano Jr., Rizal Calampiano (and his wife, Ruby); and Daniel Avanzado Jr. (and his wife, Hannah). She also has numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and other extended family members who live in the United States, the Philippines, and throughout the world.

The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home - Southside Chapel, located at 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA on Tuesday, July 11, and Wednesday, July 12, 2023, from 6 to 9 pm. Each night of visitation will begin with a novena prayer. On Wednesday, a wake service will be held after the novena.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at 12:30 pm. at St. Pius X Catholic Church located at 7800 Halprin Drive in Norfolk, VA. The final day of the novena prayers will be offered prior to the funeral mass at 11:15 am.

Adela Dulay Singson, 84, went home with the Lord peacefully on June 30, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born in Carmay Rosales, Pangasinan, Philippines. She was raised in Aringay, La Union, Philippines. She came to the United States in 1960 on a student visa. She has been a resident of Virginia Beach, VA since 1974.

Adela received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines in 1960. She worked as a Real Estate Principal Broker and Income Tax Preparer. With her husband, Filomeno, they owned Virginia Heritage Realty since 1981, and Singson Income Tax Service since 1974. She was an active and faithful parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church where she served as Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Small Faith Communities there. She was a lifetime member of the United Ilocano Association of Tidewater and also a member of the Filipino American Veterans Women Auxiliary. Adela loved life. She adored her family especially. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, ballroom and line dancing, Zumba, and karaoke singing. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Victoriano and Margarita Dulay; sisters, Felicita Dulay Leon and Carmen Dulay Patio. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Filomeno Cantor Singson; 5 children, Joyce Singson Batista, Joel Singson, Jennifer Saccoia and her husband, Lawrence, Phyllis Smallwood and her husband, Michael, Adelyn Laing and her husband, William; 4 grandchildren, Rachel Lizan and her husband, Reynaldo, Phillip Saccoia, William Laing, Jr., Adam Laing; 3 great-grandchildren, Raynor, Raegan, and Rhealeigh Lizan; her brothers, Felipe Dulay and his wife, Leonie, and Vivencio Dulay and his wife, Rebecca, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to her Comfort Care Team for their professionalism and hard work. A viewing and wake will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023, from 4-8 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502. The funeral mass will be held at 10 am, Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5343 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens mausoleum. A reception to meet and greet the family will follow the services at the Philippine Cultural Center of Virginia. Zoilo Cabiente Vergara, 83, passed away on 24 June 2023. He was born in Natividad, Pangasinan, Philippines, to the late Albino and Esmeralda Cabiente Vergara. Zoilo honorably served in the United States Navy for over 20 years before retiring. He began a second career as a barber with the Navy Exchange Command at the Norfolk Naval Operations Base, where he served for another 20 years. Zoilo was a longtime parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, where he supported the church’s Filipino-American Ministry. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, San Lorenzo Council #12378, where he served as a Fourth Degree Knight, Council Treasurer, and Council Advocate. Zoilo was also an active member of the Pangasinan Association of Virginia, the Filipino-American Veterans of Hampton Roads, and Our Lady of Namacpacan Association of America.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Eduviges (Bing); children, Mary June, and Matth John; his brother, Teodorico (Pedring); and a host of cherished family and friends.
The family invites friends to visit on Friday, 30 June 2023 from 1600-2000 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA. During the viewing, there will be a continuation of the Novena, Knights of Columbus Chalice Ceremony, and a Veterans Two Bell Ceremony. His Resurrection Mass will be held on Saturday, 1 July 2023 at 1330 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA. Following the mass, military honors will be rendered at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens prior to being laid to rest.

Julito Mata Antolin, Master Chief Petty Officer, US Navy (Retired), passed away on June 14, 2023Born on May 18, 1946, in Urdaneta, Pangasinan, Philippines, Julito was the son of late parents Isidro and Encarnacion Antolin, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to his family and country. He joined the United States Navy, became a US Citizen, and served his country proudly for over three decades before retiring honorably. His service culminated as a Head Chef for Navy Admirals and Marine Corps Generals, organizing and cooking for many US and International Dignitaries and Government Officials.

In addition to his military service, Julito enjoyed many hobbies and interests. Known as “Lito” to his friends and family, he enjoyed cooking for everyone just as much as sharing in the meal with them at the table. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, walking, dancing, and bird watching. He was generous, patient, kind, and gentle – a loving and doting husband, an exemplary father, and a happy grandfather.

Lito is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lydia T. Antolin; their son, Julito T. Antolin, Jr.; and his siblings: Ernesto, Romeo, and Leonora. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

The family has requested that services be held privately. Lito will be remembered for his dedication, kindness, generosity, and unwavering love and commitment to his family and country.

Marcelo Panagsagan Obituary

Marcelo T. Panagsagan, 86
, beloved dad and Lolo passed away on June 5, 2023.

Born in Panayakan, Tangalan Aklan, Philippines, he was the son of the late Alfredo and Castora Panagsagan. His beloved wife, Emma, also preceded him in death.

He was a founding member of the Aklan Ati-Atihan USA, Inc. and a longtime member of the St. Pius X Catholic Church. Marcelo retired from the U.S. Navy after more than 20 years.

Left to cherish his memory: daughter, Marema P. Manugo and husband, Frank; son, Joseph G. Panagsagan and wife, Lyn; grandchildren, Matthew and wife Megan, Kiana, Jaymi, and Jaden; great-grandson, Austin; great-granddaughter, Adalyn; and brother, Jose Panagsagan.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Thursday, June 15, 2023, from 6 pm to 9 pm. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 11 am. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Leonardo Somera Lambinicio APRIL 12, 1938 – MAY 28, 2023


On Sunday, May 28, 2023, Leonardo Somera Lambinicio, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away. He was eighty-five. Born in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, Phillippines to Lucio and Antonia, Leo was the sixth of seven children. Leonardo was also known as Leo, and Narding to close friends and family.

Leo spent 24 years serving in the U.S. Navy as a culinary specialist. Thereafter, he worked a combined 24 years at Sears Automotive and Virginia Beach City Public Schools as an automotive technician. He thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie amongst his workmates, which is what kept him working until age 78.

Leo was active with the Eastern Tagudinians Association and the Fil-Am Veterans of Hampton Roads. Every year, he was proud to march in the annual Virginia Beach Memorial Day parade as a member of the Fil-Am Vets. He loved cooking, fishing, gardening, and watching his favorite TV shows: pro wrestling, boxing, and Jeopardy. Everyone who knew Leo was likely treated to wonderful food, a warm sense of humor, and stories of his life and times as a child growing up in the Philippines and his many experiences while in the Navy.

Leo is survived by his wife, Leticia; children, Cyndi (Martin) and Glen (Diedre); grandson, Oliver, and sisters, Anastasia and Carolina.

Socorro “Cora” Emerenciana Sales

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our courageous mother, Mrs. Socorro “Cora” Emerenciana Sales on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. While sleeping, she passed away peacefully of natural causes at the Hearts at Home Eldercare home. Cora was born on July 1, 1926, in the small, rural town of Bato, Catanduanes, Philippines. She was ninety-six years old and predeceased by her loving husband, Regalado (Tony) Sales; her parents, Damiana and Exequel; four siblings Jaime, Jose, Corazon (Pedro) Teves, and Lydia; and cousin/best friend Belen Tatad.

Cora is survived by two daughters, Arlene Sales, and Belinda (James) Polk; three grandchildren, Jenny Polk (Tyler Griggs), Jimmy Polk (Egypt Boston), and Brian (Emily) Polk; two great-grandchildren, Wylder, and James; sister, Concepcion; and many others who knew and loved her.

Some of Cora's proud moments were becoming fluent in seven of the many Filipino languages that exist today; getting married to the love of her life, Regalado (aka Tony) Sales; moving to the U.S. and becoming a U.S. citizen during the bicentennial year; having and raising two daughters; and helping to raise three grandchildren.

Cora lived her life with exuberance and independence going from a small, farm town in the Philippines to California and then to Virginia. She loved life as much as she loved her family. She was kind, and generous and had a tremendous capacity to nurture anything (plants, animals, and people). She had a big heart and always made room for each person she met. She will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, Socorro, Coring, Cora, Mom, Mama, Grandma, and Great-Grandma. We love you.

Max Padilla, 96, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family members on May 16, 2023. Max was born in the town of Urdaneta in Pangasinan, Philippines to the late Gaudencia Padilla. He is predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Dolores, and his daughter, Kathy.

A Guerilla fighter in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded, he served as a guide to the US forces during WWII. He joined the US Navy in 1946 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of exemplary service. He founded Max’s Jewelers with numerous locations, including local Navy bases for over 20 years.

Max’s pride and joy were his family's. He loved hosting large family gatherings where he proudly displayed his notable culinary skills.

Max and Dolores could always be found dancing at the backyard barbeques and the large formal celebrations. He loved music and taught himself to play beautiful songs on his ukelele.
Max was an avid bowler, having his 90th Birthday celebration at the bowling alley. He actively bowled until he was 93 years old.

He loved to go fishing and crabbing, feasting on the plentiful catches with his family.
Max will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as the sweet patriarch who fiercely loved his wife, children, and grandchildren, proudly displaying countless pictures and trophies in his home.
Max is survived by his children, Max Padilla, Jr (Rose), Rosita Padilla (Stephanie), and Margie Ferguson (Mike); grandchildren Michele (Josh), Marisa, Michael, Lauren, and Brittany.

A visitation will be at Woodlawn Funeral Home from 6-8 pm Tuesday, May 23, 2023. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 am on Wednesday, May 24 at St Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Peter “Pete” Suazo Arreza, 93, passed away peacefully at home on May 22, 2023, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A visitation for Pete will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville, 4889 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1396 Lynnhaven Pkwy, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23453. Pete was born in Tandag, Surigao Del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines on February 28, 1930. He served in the Navy for over 23 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Europe during most of his active-duty career. He retired from the Navy as an E6. He worked as a Civil Service employee for the remainder of his career in Virginia. He was a very active member of the Tidewater Filipino Community. He was a member of the FIL-AM Veterans of Tidewater and a Board of Trustees member of the Philippine Cultural Center of Virginia. Pete loved gardening, dancing, and entertaining friends and family.

Pete is survived by his wife Avelina: His children, Steve, Linda, Susanne, Mike, Robert, Milly, and Tracy: His Grandchildren, Enrico, Rebecca, Jason, Manuel, Christopher, Matthias, Jasmin, Sabrina, Martina, Valerie, Rahel, Aron, Paxton, Olivia, Adele, Brylen, and Mireya: And his great-grandchildren, Mylo, Aiana, Julien, Noemi, Mila, Raul, Dean, and Jenah.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all that have been a part of Pete’s memorial and celebration of his life.

Roy Cueva Fontelera Obituary


With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Roy Cueva Fontelera in Norfolk, Virginia, who passed away on May 9, 2023, at the age of 61. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Roy Cueva Fontelera to pay them a last tribute.

Antonio “Tony” Octavo, 85, Obituary

Antonio “Tony” Octavo, 85, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023, in Virginia Beach, VA. Tony was born in the Philippines to Rufino and Monica Octavo. He was predeceased by his parents, his seven siblings, and his loving wife of 59 years, Ligaya. Tony is survived by his son Joseph Octavo and Joe’s significant other, Connie, and his daughter Maria Esmay and her husband, Ian. Tony also leaves behind his grandchildren, Michael and Hannah, as well as many family members and friends. Tony served in the United States Navy and retired after 20 years of dedicated service. He later worked for the Military Sealift Command as a Merchant Marine. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, ballroom dancing, and gardening.

A visitation is scheduled for 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, May 19, 2023, at Woodlawn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted on the following day, Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 2:00 pm, in the funeral home chapel with interment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Simeon Sanchez Diaz, Jr., 67, of Norfolk, VA, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

Simeon, popularly known as Boy, is the fourth of ten children - five boys and five girls. Born to Simeon Diaz, Sr. and Esperanza Sanchez Diaz, Boy had to be responsible and learned the household chores early on in the Philippines, as his father passed when Boy was young. As the oldest son, he was a hardworking and a loving brother.

Preceded in death was his father, Simeon Diaz, Sr. He leaves behind his mother and matriarch of the Diaz family, Esperanza Sanchez Diaz, who celebrated her 93rd birthday in March. He is also survived by his wife, Olive, and daughter, Kyla, and his nine siblings: Eufemia Arellano (Per), Zenaida Zulueta (Wilfredo-deceased), Cleofe Pindog (Domingo), Lourdes Busto (Rodolfo), Jerry Diaz (Yolly), Nicanor Diaz (Irene), Gregorio Diaz (Olive), Miriam Marzan (Deseperio), and Joseph Diaz (Aida). He also leaves behind dozens of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews

He will be dearly missed.

The funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 18th at 2 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. in Norfolk. The funeral liturgy will be presided over by Deacon HV Le of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Norfolk, where the family is parishioners. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Candelario Lim Bello

On April 24, 2023, Candelario Lim Bello, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away at the age of 88 years young. Candelario was born in San Esteban, Ilocos Sur, Philippines in 1935. He attended St Joseph’s Institute for grade school and earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics at the University of the East in the Philippines. He joined the United States Navy in 1960. 

He married his wife Jessica on October 15, 1966, and they eventually settled in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Candelario and Jessica became active long-term parishioners at the Church of the Ascension Roman Catholic Church. He was an active member and an officer of the United Ilocano Association of Tidewater, the Filipino American Veterans of Hampton Roads, and the Pangasinan Association of Virginia. A current member of Our Lady of Namacpacan Association of America, and the Samahang Tagalog.

He retired from the Navy after 20 years. He followed his true passion for the culinary arts and opened the Court of Mandarin Restaurant, a local staple of Filipino, Chinese, and American cuisine for over 25 years. He also catered countless private and community events over three decades.

Candelario’s love for gardening was known by all. He frequently grew kangkong, ampalaya, kamote tops, and eggplants. He was also a consummate handyman who could build or repair almost anything by hand.

Candelario was known to be hard-working, kind, helpful, thoughtful, and generous. His knowledge has passed through his children and grandchildren and sparks fond memories at family get-togethers.

Candelario is survived by his wife of over 56 years Jessica Dario Bello, sons Broderick Bello (wife Lan Bello), Bradford Bello (wife Jovanna Bello), Brian Bello (wife Grace Ahn), daughter Brandi Bello Ngo (husband Danny Ngo), sisters Lourdes Chua and Luisita Viloria, brothers Rosito Bello and Antonio Bello, nine wonderful grandchildren, Brendan, Benjamin, Blaise, Lindsay, Alexander, Lily, Bruce, Jacob and Harper, and many devoted nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Pedro Lim, his mother Maxima Bello, sister Luz Rapanut and brother Jose Bello.

Wake services will be at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia on Monday, May 1st, at 5 pm. A wake live stream will be available on the funeral home's Facebook page: Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville.

Milaagros "Mila" Casupanan

Milagros "Mila" Casupanan, 65, born on September 30th, 1957, and passed away on April 24th, 2023 in Norfolk, Virginia, was known for her infectious laughter and warm hugs. She loved her family deeply and would do anything for them.

She was a loving wife to her husband, Domingo Casupanan Jr. She was a devoted mother to her three children, Zaidelaine (married to Lawrence), Kasey (married to Corey), and Tyler. She was also a proud grandmother to her three grandchildren, Kyler, Alex, and Kaleo, who affectionately called her "Yoya, Lala" She’s a goal-driven daughter of Rosita and Wilfredo Arellano, and a caring sister to her siblings Charles, Samuel, Zenaida, Marilyn, John, Ferdinand, Imelda, Rudolph, and Wilma.

Mila was a compassionate person who touched the lives of everyone around her. She served her community as a dentist in her homeland, the Philippines. She was known as “Doktora Mila”. Her patients loved her gentle hands and great bedside manners. She had a heart of gold and would go out of her way to help anyone in need. Her kindness and generosity will be missed by all who knew her.

She was also God-fearing and prayerful. She passed on her Catholic faith to her children.
Although she is no longer with us, we take comfort in knowing that she is at peace in the arms of our Savior and reunited with her parents, who preceded her in death. Rest in peace, Mila. We will always cherish your memory and all the joy you brought into our lives.

A celebration of life will take place at Riddick Funeral Service on Thursday, April 27, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be a funeral Liturgy at 5:00 p.m. on the same day. She will rest at her home for some time before her burial.

Sylvia Reyes Isaac passed away on April 18, 2023, in Virginia Beach. She was born in the Philippines in 1952 to Sabina and Rodrigo Reyes. She married Jose in 1972 and they celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this year.

Our mother loved to cook for her friends and family, ESPECIALLY her kare-kare, loved to sing and dance, and most of all, to entertain and care for her three grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Jose, children Jessica (Scott), Josyl (Owen), and Joseph (Katherine), grandchildren Isaac, Gabriel, Leia, sister Felicidad, brother Carlos, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

She joins her mother Sabina and father Rodrigo, and siblings Rodrigo, Aurora, Jose, Imelda, Virginia, and Angelito.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Dr. in Virginia Beach. Gualberto Agsana Veracruz

Gualberto Agsana Veracruz (86), of Chesapeake, VA passed away on April 19, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. Since 2012, Bert fought a long battle against dementia. His family is deeply saddened by his death.

Gualberto, fondly known as Bert and Pop, was born on July 12, 1936, to Florentina and Santiago Veracruz in the province of Isabela, Philippines. He was a beloved sibling to seven brothers and one sister. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1958 and dedicated 25 years to serving our country before retiring in 1983. He was a friendly and selfless soul with the biggest heart. He will be missed and remembered for the many lives he touched. He was quiet yet cared deeply for the people around him. Bert loved his backscratcher and took it everywhere he went. He enjoyed fishing and crabbing with his sons, cooking for his family, and traveling. Pop was active in his sons' lives and enjoyed coaching their sports teams. Bert made friends wherever he went and referred to people as his buddies. After retirement, Pop enjoyed spending time with his family. He will truly be missed and his memory will live on.

Bert loved his family deeply. Throughout his life, he was referred to in many ways. He was a son and brother. He became a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. His wife and children were the light of his life. Bert is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Purificacion (Puring), and his three sons, Ferdinand (Ferdie), Frederik (Erik) and his wife Norvie, and Francis (Fran). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, numerous relatives, and many dear friends.

We are extremely grateful to family and friends who supported us over the years. Please remember Bert through the funny and silly stories that celebrate what was good and blessed in his life.

- Cesar Layson Liguid passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, peacefully surrounded by family and close friends. He was 90 years old.

Born on July 31, 1932, in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte, Philippines, he was the third son of eight siblings to the late Agapito and Narcisa Layson Liguid. He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy. Cesar enjoyed time in his garden, a friendly game of poker, and going out to eat and he was always up for an adventure!

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Cecenia "Bobbie" Usares Liguid; his son, Julius Liguid of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Georgia Liguid-Miller, son-in-law, Danny Miller, granddaughter, Ireland Liguid Miller; daughter, Tracie Liguid; and a host of relatives and friends.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial service with military honors will follow at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.

A Christian wake service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2023, with visitation until 9 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel.

Jose Clarin Cabaccan

Jose Clarin Cabaccan, 80, passed away peacefully on March 25th, 2023. He was born on March 22nd, 1943, in Minanga, Isabela, Philippines to Cirilo and Emetria Cabaccan. Jose was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He was known for his kind heart, gentle spirit, and willingness to help anyone. Jose had a passion for learning, and his academic achievements were a testament to his hard work and dedication.

Jose is survived by his loving wife, Teresita, his children, Mariella and Joselito, his siblings, Jovencia, Oliva, Anita, and Orlando, and his grandchildren, Andrew, Jonathan, Gabriella, and Isabella. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cirilo and Emetria Cabaccan, his sister, Melba, and his daughter, Maria Rosary Carissa. Jose will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home on April 8th and 9th, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Onofre “Rey” Daguio Castillo went peacefully to be with the Lord on March 22, 2023, after 83 years of sharing his beautiful, gentle soul with the world.
Rey was born on February 2, 1940, in Bacarra, Philippines to his late parents Emilio Castillo and Remedios Daguio Castillo. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, Godfather, and friend to all.

Rey attended Northwestern University in Loaog, Philippines for Civil Engineering. He joined the United States Navy in 1961 and proudly served for 27 years in active duty and another 10 years in civil service. He retired as Chief Petty Officer (E-7). During his years on active duty, he traveled the world on board the USS R.H. McCard (DD-822), USS America (CVA-66), and the USS Nimitz (CVN-68). He would tell stories of his time during the Vietnam War, being selected on a team to receive and serve Menachem Begin, Prime Minister of Israel, and his excursions in different parts of the world.

He met the love of his life, Elena “Ellen” Marquez Castillo, through mutual friends in the early parts of his military career. They were married in 1966 and had a wonderful, total of 56 years together. His parents, Emilio and Remedios Castillo preceded him in death, and his son-in-law, Dr. Ryan Cahoon. Rey is survived by his loving wife, Elena, daughter Elaine Castillo Nguyen and son-in-law Dai Nguyen, daughter Remy Castillo Jornales and son-in-law Gene Jornales, daughter Dr. Emily Castillo Cahoon, six grandchildren: Rae Nguyen, Rena Jornales, Chloe Jornales, Tessa Jornales, Riley Cahoon and Raelyn Cahoon, and his siblings Leticia Robles, Ofelia Mangaliman, Emy Castillo, Bella Torda, and Evelyn Velasco.

Dionisia Tabancura Fernandez, 84, of Virginia Beach, Virginia passed on March 18, 2023. Dionisia was born on June 10, 1938. A native of the Laoac, Philippines, she was the daughter of Pablo Tabancura and Theresa Rodillas. She was a graduate of Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines. She was actively involved in the Catholic Church, serving as a eucharistic minister and volunteering for many parish events. Throughout her life, she was a devoted spouse, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Isabelo Alejo Fernandez. She is survived by her two daughters, Martha Fernandez and husband, Russell Cook; Irene Roebuck and husband, Dennis; one son, Neil A. Fernandez and wife, Donna; and six grandchildren, Elizabeth Sabo and husband, Ryan, Ryan Cook and wife, Ragan, and Justin Cook; Christopher Roebuck; Chase and Brendon Fernandez.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 23rd at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Princess Anne Memorial Park. Angelina S. "Lina" Ocampo, 81, of Virginia Beach, passed away on March 17, 2023. She was born in Tondo, Manila, Philippines. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Alberto Peralta Ocampo, and daughter Heidi (Ocampo) Trieu.

Lina retired after 19 years of federal service at the Human Resources Services Center in Norfolk. She loved to travel, cook, and was an active member of her husband's local dance group.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Marichu Cordero (Hector) of California; son Dennis Ocampo (Linda), grandchildren Ron and Megan, great-grandchild Alanya; and three grandchildren Genieve Trieu (Pool), Alan and Royale Trieu; great-grandchildren Jase and Madeline (Pool).

Dolores Alzate Alcantara, 88
, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. She was the wife of the late Jose Tejada Alcantara for 53 years and a resident of Virginia Beach, VA.

Born February 10, 1935, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo Alzate. She graduated from Far Eastern University with an Accounting degree. She came to the United States in 1974. Dolores retired from Norfolk Naval Air Station with 20 years of service as a Budget Assistant. She was a devoted member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church for over 49 years and a dedicated leader who made a big impact on the Filipino community. She served 20 years as President of Mrs. Philippines and Court and President of the Women’s Club at PCC.

She is survived by two children, Joselito Alzate Alcantara and Jennifer Alcantara Bertagnolli and her husband, Chris Ray Bertagnolli both of Virginia Beach, VA; seven grandchildren, Brittney, Joshua, Julian, Jordan, and Joelle Alcantara; Madeline and Juan Carlos Bertagnolli.

Mr. Roberto "Ruben" Evangelista Ramos, age 87, of Norfolk, Virginia departed this life on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. Roberto was born in the Philippines to Francisco and Bonifacia Ramos.
Roberto served 39 years of Federal Service. He is a retired veteran of 20 years in the US Navy and later served as a Warehouse Branch Chief in the Civil Service for 19 years.
Roberto is survived by his son Russell “Haj” Ramos (Robin H. Ramos); and his daughter Jerreemar A. Ramos (Travis Brown); his grandson Kyle Roberto Agati, his grandson Ryan Austin Ramos, his granddaughter Sidney Alexis Ramos and his grandson Jeremy Adam Wimmer.
Roberto was preceded in death by his wife Dominga A. Ramos and his parents: Francisco and Bonifacia Ramos.

Marlene Delgado Bansen passed away peacefully at home on February 25, 2023. She was born in the Philippines to the late Olivia Delgado. She joins her daughter Olivia Marie Catalina and her mother in heaven. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Mario F. Bansen, Jr., Step Son Gary and his wife Britney, and their daughter Aubrey. Her daughter Raymalyn Paez is living in California with her husband Marevick, and her son Caleb. Her sister Mary Jane Delgado lives in Oklahoma and her brother Anthony Puzon in the Philippines and his wife Teresa and their children, Stephen Anthony, Shanaica Eunice, and Sabrina Louise. Her niece, Noelle Dizon from Oklahoma. Her nephew, Noel Jan Karol Dizon, currently serving in the US Navy stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, his wife Dominique, and children, Noelle Bryon Stephen, Ava Janine, Ayla Gianna, and Ava Lianna.

Arlene loves to cook, bake and sing as well. She enjoyed making cookies with Ava and Ayla. She touched so many lives in so many ways and will be greatly missed by so many. Norfolk - On February 10, 2023, Ricardo A. Cruz, 83, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home after being surrounded by loved ones in his final days.

“Rick” or “Carding” (as he was affectionately known) was born on April 3, 1939, to Francisco and Felicidad Cruz in Manila, Philippines. He attended Far Eastern University in Manila, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, served in the Vietnam War, and retired after 20 years of proud service. He then went on to complete another 16 years in civil service. He was a Fil-Am Vets of Hampton Roads member and the United Ilocano Assoc. of Tidewater. He was also a member of Tidewater Christian Church where he shared his passion for cooking and singing for others.

Besides his wife of 57 years, Luzviminda P. Cruz, he is survived by his sons (and spouses), Enrique (Kathleen) of Virginia Beach, Hector (Sonya) of Chesapeake, and Ronald (Maricel) of Herndon; as well as his grandchildren, Erica, Devon, Sarah, Olivia, Micah, Ava, and his great-grandchildren, Jayden, Rowan, Elianna, Mila, and Olivia expected in March 2023.

A viewing and memorial service will be held Thursday, February 23, 2023, at the Woodlawn Funeral Home in Norfolk at 5 PM.

He will be laid to rest the following day (FRI, FEB 24, 11 AM) at the Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.

Orlando Distor Manalo, 77,
passed away on February 19, 2023, at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Orlando was born on December 15, 1945, in Manila, Philippines to Lorenzo and Marcela Manalo. He spent his early childhood years in Maragondon, Cavite, Philippines before joining the military service in 1963.

Orlando dedicated 24 years of his life to the United States Navy, where he served as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and Logistician. During his time in the Navy, he participated in boxing tournaments and was known for his skill and toughness in the ring. He had a passion for cars and an immense amount of pride as a homeowner. He was known for his pristine lawn and crystal-clear pool.

Orlando was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 51 years, Sarah, and a proud father to his three children, Jerry, Jeanne (Ken), and Janette (Robert). He was also a beloved grandfather to his grandchildren, Tristen, Riley, and Gavin, who brought him immense joy and pride. Orlando was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Angelito (Zenaida); he is survived by his siblings, Rodolfo (Leonida), and Lorenzo, Jr. (Anacoreta), Jaime (Milagros), Nolasco (Virginia), Alexander (Rufina), Ceferino (Melissa), Eriberto (Shannon), Maria Luisa (Bong), and extended families.

Orlando will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We'll miss his jokes, his unmistakable laughter, his sometimes unsolicited advice, but most of all his love. He will be remembered forever.

Arturo "Boy" Aban Abille, 69
of Virginia Beach, passed away on February 3 at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital after a long battle with kidney disease.

He was born in San Felipe, Zambales Philippines. He is survived by his sister, Norma Abille Abiba; niece/adopted daughter, Pamela Lynn Abille Asuelo (Randall); and older brother, Virgilio (Ligaya); as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents, Agustin, Sr., and Trinidad; brothers, Mariano, Rogilio, Agustin, Jr., Restituto, Dionisio, his twin brother Alberto; and sisters, Lolita, Elizabeth, and Adelina.

A viewing will be available for family and friends on Friday, February 17 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at the Catholic Church of Saint Mark on Saturday, February 18, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Colonial Grove Memorial Park. Leonardo I. Bautista Age 75, passed away due to heart failure on Sunday, January 22. 2023 at Sentara Virginia Beach General after several days of confinement at Sentara Leigh Hospital Transition Unit for 6 days from an Ambulance in the Emergency Room for a suspected and needed immediate heart valve replacement. Leonardo was born February 27, 1947, in Manila, Philippines to the late Moises Q. Bautista and the late Eugenia I. Bautista of Bailen Cavite Philippines. He was predeceased by his older sister, Avelina or Ate Belen.

Leo, Pare, Nards, or Nardo as many of his close friends and family call him, went to Rizal High School in Pasig City, Metro Manila Philippines, and was a graduate of the Class of 1964. After graduation, Leo pursued his dream of becoming a member of the USN and applied at the United States, Naval base in Sangley Point, Cavite, Philippines. He officially became one of the new groups of enlisted men on May 27, 1966. Leo married his teenage sweetheart Helie (Arcangel), on August 8, 1968, in Manila District Court on his first visit back home. Helie joined Leo after college to start his own family. The following year, they were blessed with their first-born son they named "Lear", (a combination of the first 2 letters of their names). By 1975, they were blessed with a second son, whom they named Lennard on August 17, 1975. And life seemed perfect. Tragedy struck the family when on June 17, 1989, their first-born 17-year-old son Lear, was killed in a boating accident while having fun with friends. And that turns their seemingly perfect lives upside down.

Leonardo is survived by Helie, his wife of 54 years; his son, Lennard & his wife, Rea and 2 Beautiful Grandchildren, Sophia Grace "Ivanka", (the term of endearment, Leo and Helie addressed their first grandchild meaning "God is gracious") and 3-year-Old Olivia Marie of Williamsburg.

Leo also was survived by his sister, Phoebe, and husband Jimmy Figueroa of Virginia Beach; brothers, Nephtali and his wife Divine of Sydney Australia; and younger brother, Dan and his wife Carol of New Jersey; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and many family friends, and others whose lives Leonardo has touched.

In addition to joining and retiring from the Navy after 28 years of service, one of Leo's proudest accomplishments was being the one to bring his entire family- his parents, his siblings, his wife, and his in-laws' families -from the Philippines over to the United States, in which all of them are full of gratitude and in deepest appreciation for such an opportunity. After serving in the military, Leo went on to work with the USPS for 8 more years before retiring permanently to enjoy life for good, and life was good. Grateful To God And the opportunity is given to him by this Great Country of the USA and the US Navy. Grateful And Proud Leo.

Antonia Tan Conda, 89, was embraced by God in heaven on January 22, 2023. “Tony” or “Ping” as her family called her was born in Jolo, Sulu, Philippines on July 4, 1933, to Muy Tan and Felicidad Estrella Tan. She was the third child of seven and is survived by her beloved sisters Angelina Tan Garcia and Anita Tan Joson.

Antonia, who graduated from Zamboanga General Hospital with a Registered Nursing Degree in 1954, came to America shortly thereafter to begin her career as a nurse in Chicago, Illinois, moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and eventually settled in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Her career in nursing covered OB-GYN, ICU, CCU, and pediatrics and she worked at several hospitals, including the U.S. Public Health Service, U.S. Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Maryview Hospital, and ultimately Westminster Canterbury Retirement Community.

While living in Baltimore in 1959, she met a young Navy enlisted man Orlando M. Conda who she married in 1960. Antonia is survived by her two sons Cesar V. Conda and Bernard T. Conda and five grandsons from Cesar and his wife Janice G. Sadaya-Conda: Jared, Jeremy, Jorge, Jacob, and John Caleb Conda.

Antonia will be remembered as a beautiful loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt to her family. She loved to cook and was always making sure that everyone was well-fed. She enjoyed playing Mahjong with her family and friends. She was a very strong-willed, eternally optimistic woman, who took pride in her job and how she presented herself to others. Above all, Antonia put her family above everyone else, especially her children and grandchildren

Isabelo Delizo Ferrera, 71,
beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2023, while en route to the Philippines with his loving wife of 47 years, Florence Ferrera.

Isabelo, more commonly known as Billy was born November 5, 1951, to Gabriel and Coloriana Ferrera in Naguilian, La Union, Philippines. He graduated in 1968 from Baguio City High School, where he first crossed paths with Florence, the love of his life.

After graduating from high school, Billy joined the United States Navy. He was ranked as an E-7 Chief Petty Officer and served for 20 years, from 1971 to 1991. While in the U.S. Navy, Billy attended online classes through St. Leo College, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Management in 1991. Subsequently, he enrolled in the DePaul School of Nursing in Norfolk, graduating in 1995, the same year his son graduated from high school. Billy worked as a Registered Nurse on the telemetry unit at DePaul Hospital until he retired in 2015.

Billy and Florence became pen pals after he graduated from high school. Their first date was not until 3 years later, in 1970 at Baguio City Mines View Park. They were married in Las Vegas on May 26, 1975. Together they shared two children, Marc and Marisa.

Billy's family meant the world to him. He enjoyed weekly dinners with his family and loved to watch his grandchildren play sports. He delighted in traveling with his wife, visiting multiple countries together including Japan, Pakistan, France, Monaco, Italy, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. Billy's other interests included gardening, bowling, and being a proud member of the Fentress Freemasons and the Knights of Rizal in Virginia Beach.

In addition to his parents, Billy was predeceased by his siblings Antonio, Leovina, and Medardo and his niece Rose Anne. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Florence; his son Marc H. Ferrera, MD, and his wife Michelle of St. Johns, FL; his daughter Marisa F. Hofmann, MD, and her husband Jeff of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren, Alexander, Isabella, Luke, and Brandon; his siblings Ricardo, Mercuria, Concesa, and Genoviva; as well as numerous dear family members and friends.

Visitations will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, February 16, and from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, February 17, 2023, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Dr. in Virginia Beach. A wake liturgy is planned at 6:00 pm on Friday, February 17 at the funeral home. The funeral mass will be held Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7800 Halprin Dr. in Norfolk.

 Dr. Marieta Bajit
passed away peacefully on February 1, 2023. Born in 1942 in Pagsanjan Falls, Laguna, Philippines to Fidelino Agawin and Marciana Gamboa Agawin, she graduated from the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Medical School, (Manila, Philippines) Class of 1963. After a general internship in Paterson, NJ she moved to New York City to complete her anesthesiology residency at both the Hospital for Joint Diseases (now NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases) and St. Luke's Hospital Center (now Mount Sinai Morningside). Through her UST Medical School classmate and fellow resident, Fernando, she met his brother Jerry Bajit. They wed in 1966 and later relocated to Norfolk, VA. Her son, Michael, was born in the summer of 1969 and her daughter was born in early 1979.

As one of the first female anesthesiologists in Virginia, she joined Anesthesia Service, Inc., in 1973, a private practice group, whose members each had immigrated to the United States. She performed cases and provided care during a 40+ year career in hospitals across Tidewater: ("Old") Leigh Memorial, Sentara Leigh Memorial, Bon Secours DePaul, Sentara Norfolk General, Humana Bayside, and Chesapeake General. She was an active parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church (Norfolk, VA) volunteering on the Parish Council and the FilAm Association. She helped with fundraising and planning for the development of the San Lorenzo Spiritual Center (Virginia Beach, VA). She also was a member of the Filipino Apostolate of Tidewater, Diocese of Richmond. In 1995 she traveled on a pilgrimage to Rome and Vatican City to celebrate the 175th year of the Diocese of Richmond. The highlight of their tour was a private audience with Saint John Paul II on October 13th, in which she shook the hand of the Pope. She was an active, life-long member of the Philippine Medical Association of Southeastern Virginia (PMA-SEV). Joining her friends and colleagues she occasionally volunteered in healthcare service projects locally and in the Philippines. She also assisted with their fundraising efforts and annual galas. In 2010 publisher Inside Business recognized her in their 8th Annual Women in Business Achievement Awards, among two dozen women "who have overcome adversity, shown tenacity and built successful careers - many of them in what were once male-dominated fields."

Since she started her medical career in the New York City area in the 1960s she carried a fondness for the New York sports teams of that era, especially the NY Yankees and the NY Knicks. She often surprised people with her knowledge of various music: from classic rock, pop, and soul to contemporary R&B, hip-hop, and country. She was a fan of music festivals and concerts, attending them whenever she could. A traveler both domestically and internationally, she often recounted memories of her trips to Steamboat Springs, CO; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Vienna, Austria; and, Medjugorje, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. She also enjoyed the different cruises she took with close family friends to various ports of call. In retirement, she explored her love of the arts through ballroom dancing, introduction to piano, and basic percussion. She pursued them all for as long as she had the strength to perform.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jerry. She is survived by her sisters: Pat Sayo, Madelina DePaz, Myrna Militante, and Gilda Lapid. Her brother-in-law, Fernando Bajit, and sister-in-law, Lourdes Bajit. Her son, Michael, and her daughter, Jennifer. Nieces Mylene Sayo Cooke and Kristin Militante; and nephews Paul John Sayo, Jonathan DePaz, Andre Militante, Jeffrey Militante, Chester Militante, Michael Lapid, Mark Lapid, and Matthew Lapid. Her special extended family: Joanne York, Beverly Harrison, Janice McLaughlin, Patti Killen, Brandon Harrison, and Joey Killen.

Her Wake and Visitation will take place on Friday, February 10, 2023, 6 PM - 8 PM, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA. Her Funeral Mass will be Saturday, February 11, 2023, 11 AM-12 PM, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7800 Halprin Drive, Norfolk, VA. Erlinda de Leon Mallari, 82, passed peacefully on Feb 2, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 31, 1940 in Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines to Macario and Anacleta de Leon. She married Jose Banzil Mallari on April 18, 1963. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother (Lola), and great-grandmother.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, sewing, cooking, and watching her favorite movies and TV shows, especially the Hallmark channel. She gave unconditional love and support to her cherished husband and children. She will be deeply missed and loved forevermore.

She is survived by her beloved children: Lani (d Walter), Regi, Roy, Jean, Luci (d Manny), Joselynn, Jose II (Gina); and her beloved grandchildren, Shani (Cisco), Aaron (Abigail), Jonathan, Lynnsey, Jose III, Kayla, Javier, Mateo, Gabriel, great-grandchild Helena, and sister, Maria Luz. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jose, daughter, Joan, sister, Ester, and brothers, Jose and Enrique.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, Feb 5, 2023, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. A Mass will be held on Monday, Feb 6, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.

Benedicto Baxa, 84
, died on January 5, 2023. A native of the Philippines, he retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and then owned and operated a laundromat. He attended the Church of St. Therese and enjoyed ballroom dancing, where he won several competitions. Benedicto also enjoyed gardening, building koi ponds, and maintaining his personal koi pond.

He is survived by his wife, Esther G. Baxa; daughter, Cheryl Baxa; two sons, Nathaniel Baxa, and Daryl Baxa; two brothers, Rogelio Baxa and Eliseo Baxa; and two grandchildren, Dylan and Teagen.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 11 AM at the Church of St. Therese. Burial with military honors will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel on Wednesday from 6-8 PM. www.SturtevantFH.com

Arcelia (Cellie) P. Montefalcon Espiritu
returned to the home of our Lord on December 31, 2022.

She was born and raised in Cavite City, Philippines, and was the first daughter of the late Bernardo Malaban Montefalcon and Fidela Plata Montefalcon. A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the Philippine Women's University, she worked for many years as an Administrative Secretary/Financial Administrator at the Norfolk Public School system. While working full-time as a mother and wife, she continued to pursue additional education graduating Cum Laude in Education Studies from Tidewater Community College. She retired after 25 years from Norfolk Public Schools.

She was a member of the Filipino-American (FIL-AM) and Eucharistic minister at St. Pius X Catholic Church; Cavite Association of Virginia; Cavite City Families; the Association of Educational Office Professionals of Norfolk (AEOPN); and many more organizations/activities.

Those left to cherish her memory are Emilio (Romy) Espiritu, her loving husband of 60 years; her children: Bernadette Waechter, MD and her husband, Jeff, CDR Emilson Espiritu, USN (retired) and his wife, Linda; her grandchildren: Lauren (Clay), Emilson II (Ashley), Gabrielle (Alec), Madison, and Donovan; and her great-grandchildren: Giovanni and Keira. Â

She is preceded in death by her brothers: Rodrigo P. Montefalcon, and Igmidio P. Montefalcon; and sisters: Ligaya M. Mercado, Teresita P. Montefalcon, and Corazon M. Delfin.

A Celebration of Life will be held January 10, 2023, at 11 am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Norfolk, VA with a viewing an hour before at the Church, followed by entombment within the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
