ZAI is alive and well!

Variety of home-cooked delicacies – enjoy!

Sunday, July 31, 2022 – Was a refreshing day for the Zambales Association as they held their first gathering after long unproductive periods of the pandemic. The elbow greetings that became common were familiar signs of the day. It was the first sign of life as friends and relatives arrived at the picnic area. Their friendly faces were not so regular anymore. Some members had grown healthy with wider waistlines. At the same time, others lose weight and do many more athletics. But we all have slight traces of gray hairs, making us look more mature. One thing is sure: there is no escape from aging. We are all aged and look beautiful and intelligent. If you are the exception, let us in on your secrets of staying young. There is a gold mine here. Haha!

The day was full of surprises – like one asking about regular members who are no longer with us. Another is our pandemic survivors and how they cope after the treatment and recovery. The variety of News stories (sad and sound) from back home also brings surprises. So over two years of the pandemic, so much was taken from us in so many ways. The good thing is that we might be able to see a bright future, tempered by the unpleasantness of the pandemic.

Ooy! Sikret lang ito, ha! Many enjoyed the short line dancing, laughing freely, eating, and drinking water or soda while maintaining social distancing. Hmmm! Paano nangyari 'ito? Hehe! Believe it or not, Zambales folks are wonderfully creative people. They are friendly, easy to talk to, warm up to you quickly, and will not make you feel like a stranger. All they are trying to do is share and live life as it was meant to be. Ika nga sa Ingles: Be nice ngarud.

We also like to thank ZAI Pres. Joe Alvior for providing the unique compositions of bygone days. Songs that bring tears and fond memories of life back home. His selections and taste in music are excellent. Thank you for being there for us.

Fe & Joe Agbanglo, Larry Sahagun, Mila & Sam Raganit, and M. Najera.
A plan is already in place for a group outing to the Maryland Live Casino on September 10, 2022. As of now, the cost per person is sixty-five dollars ($65.00). For reservations: Call Joe Aranas at 757-472-4403, Joe Alvior at 757-277-5148, and Pinah Cecil at 757-831-9673. More on the Facebook ZAI group site. Caution: Because of the ongoing shrinkflation, the price per person might just change a little. This is a precautionary warning to avoid surprises. Understand – everything is going up: gas, wages, groceries, etc. It is also rumored that slot machines are paying less nowadays. Hehe! Just kidding.

Christmas Party

Also in the planning stage is the upcoming Christmas party, on December 18, 2022, at Glenwood Recreation Center on Roundhill Rd, Virginia Beach, next to the Honey Bee Golf Course. It is not too early to think of what is best for everyone. The Christmas party committee will look forward to hearing your input and, most importantly, your goodwill thoughts for everyone. Thank you.

   The Philippine Cultural Center

The pride of the Metropolitan area of Hampton Roads. Thanks to the planning and foresight of those who came before us. Kudos to the pioneer professionals, the Sailors (active and retired), and their families who donated their time and hard-earned fortune to make this masterpiece a reality. Future generations of Filipino Americans will only wonder how they made it possible. See the link: Philippine Cultural Center to learn more about the Center.

For the information of everyone, the Center is temporarily closed due to the pandemic. However, there is a rumor that preparations are being made to reopen soon. Yaaay.

Woodstock Park

Proud & Pretty ZAI Women's Group

The newly renovated Woodstock Park on Providence road just received a new facelift. The new beautifully constructed picnic sheds, the kid's playground, the skateboard park, the dog park, and the tennis courts are the best money can buy. They also added parking areas closer to the picnic grounds for convenience. Thank you, Parks & Recreation Department, Virginia Beach.

Food Preparation Area

(L-R) Alex Gonzales and Freddie Manglicmot
They said, “Fire it up.”

The grilling area was busy all day. Thanks to Tom Cecil, Joe Aranas, Freddie Manglicmot, Alex Gonzales, Larry Sahagun, and everyone else who stayed behind to clean up the used picnic area. We are sure we failed to mention many more dedicated members, but you must excuse Mike Colorado for not remembering many things. He is getting old, folks. Hehe.

This year, 2023, is the fifth year we've published the ZAI Newsletter under the Dawasan Blogger. We remain operational during the first part of the pandemic. Now, the outlook is beginning to look good. There are still doubts and uncertainties out there. (Mask-wearing is now optional.) It's what life is all about. So, let's keep alert and grateful for our experiences as they come to us daily. As the saying goes, 'Plan for the best. Work for the worse.'

We apologize for unintended errors. English is our second language and we know there is room for improvement. We are trying our best. Unfortunately, we are not Grammarians by profession. So perfection is hardly attainable. Sorry.

Your support has empowered us to press on despite our limited resources. We appreciate your patience and help in making our newsletter grow. — Mike Colorado
