Happy 4th of July, everyone!

Many will be celebrating Independence Day, which is coming up soon. Monday, July 4, 2022, is a non-work day for many. Unfortunately, not everyone will be off from work. You know what they say, “Somebody has to do it!”  To those who maintain peace and order in our community, our firefighters, first responders, doctors, nurses, and everyone makes life easy and pleasant. We can never thank them enough for their sacrifices.

With pandemic relaxation guidelines in place now, it is okay to grill your favorites and have a few cold drinks. Like in the old days, we complain about the weather and hope the rain will not come down on us. Enjoy your 4th, guys.

Every city in the region is opening up. Being bottled up for 16 months and not going anywhere (except doctor's visits, pharmacies, grocery stores, etc.) is a big step forward. But let us not get overconfident here because the enemy is invisible and tasteless. It might just be waiting around the corner. Being infected at this point and time will throw away all those sacrifices we made in the past sixteen months. Have fun, but be cautious. Think about safety first!  Fireworks locations Read more >>

Upcoming Community Events

 by Joe Alvior

The Fil-Am Friendship Day will be held on July 10 at Red Wing Park:  It is time to release that bottled anxiety and fears of being grabbed by this virus. We believe we are safe now, but never let our guard down. Delta Variant is a virus reported to be present in areas of the country with low vaccination rates. If you are not inoculated yet, please do it very soon. We would like to see you come eat halo-halo at the park. Read more,

The Filipino ingenuity will shine out there with their fundraising gimmicks. Halo-halo could be one item to look for.

A joke: We are not allowed to bring saluyot and ampalaya when meeting St. Peter. That is a: No! No!

  • Also, on October 02-03, 2021, Fil-Am Fest will be held at Mt Trashmore in Virginia Beach. Mark these dates in your calendar and think Phun, Phun, Phun!

The latest in the COVID-19 story

According to a peer-reviewed study published in the science journal Nature, scientists found that the vaccines induced a strong reaction that may protect against Covid-19 for years. The study reinforces a previous finding, first reported in May. People who have recovered from infection and have been fully inoculated with one of the mRNA vaccines have an even more potent immune response.

Filipino travelers arriving at and departing from the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in California, USA, can now get a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for free.

In a statement on Tuesday, the SFO management said qualified individuals, which now include Filipinos, can get the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) single-dose vaccine at the SFO medical clinic from Mondays to Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jokes (gargarekgek lang apo)

 On Losing Weight

A man in conversation with his friend says that his wife is on a 5-week diet.
The friend curiously asks, how much has she lost?
The man replies, “Two weeks!”

Genie Joke

A Filipino was being honored by his peers at an award dinner when suddenly a flash of light and a Genie appeared before the Filipino.

Genie turned to the Filipino and said: “You have made a great contribution to your field, and I would like to reward you for everything you’ve done. You have the choice of infinite wealth, boundless wisdom, or utter beauty. Pick one.”

Without hesitating, the Filipino said: “wisdom.” “Done!” said the Genie and disappeared in a cloud of smoke and a bolt of lightning.

There was a great silence as everyone looked at the Filipino. Finally, a voice called out: “Say something wise.” The Filipino turned to the crowd and said: “I should have taken the money.”

Cooking Time
Kare-Kare

Kare-Kare is an umami-rich stew made of oxtail, tripe, and vegetables swimming in a thick peanut sauce. Paired with a sweet shrimp paste, Kare-kare gives your taste buds an explosion of flavors.

Three things make kare-kare extra special: the tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat, the vegetables, and the ultra-rich sauce.

The meats used for kare-kare are not your typical cuts of beef. Tripe refers to the lining of the stomach and has a uniquely soft and chewy consistency.

Oxtail is very tender and fatty, which makes the dish even more flavorful.

String beans, eggplant, bok choy, and banana blossoms add texture and color to the dish.

And then there's the sauce. Infused with crushed peanuts and peanut butter, Kare-kare sauce has the best combination of sweet and savory.

Since it is not the easiest dish to prepare, kare-kare is normally reserved for special occasions. But with all that flavor, it is definitely worth the effort. Enjoy.

This year, 2023, is the fifth year we've published the ZAI Newsletter under the Dawasan Blogger. We remain operational during the first part of the pandemic. Now, the outlook is beginning to look good. There are still doubts and uncertainties out there. (Mask-wearing is now optional.) It's what life is all about. So, let's keep alert and grateful for our experiences as they come to us daily. As the saying goes, 'Plan for the best. Work for the worse.'

We apologize for unintended errors. English is our second language and we know there is room for improvement. We are trying our best. Unfortunately, we are not Grammarians by profession. So perfection is hardly attainable. Sorry.

Your support has empowered us to press on despite our limited resources. We appreciate your patience and help in making our newsletter grow. — Mike Colorado

I received the July issue. Thanks a lot.
This is a special occasion to remind our Filipino Community
how important it is to have at least one newsletter of our own
to provide updated information, showcase simple family events, and fun
and progress in their own little way. Now recently it includes Obituaries.
More Power to the ZAI , Editor, staff and members!
God bless you in a special way, and God bless the USA!
